City pitches new zoning rules west of Fulton Market

Chicago planning officials want to redraw a few blocks of the zoning map west of the Fulton Market District to allow new types of business and development, while also making sure most of the heavily industrial Near West Side neighborhood stays the way it is. The plan, shared last night with area residents and business owners, would open up roughly four blocks between Ogden and Ashland avenues in a long-standing planned manufacturing district to offices, retailers, restaurants and other services that were previously blocked. The rest of the Kinzie Industrial Corridor, which runs west of Ogden between Lake Street and Grand Avenue, would continue to be governed by PMD zoning, which heavily restricts non-industrial uses.
